Happy pride month!
In recognition of pride month, posts will mostly be LGBTQ+ related: posts about queer and disabled icons, Ask Aunt Lori topics regarding LGBTQ+ issues, and articles on the intersection of disability and queerness. There are a lot of birthdays this month too!
It's going to be a great month, spoonies!
Let's start this month off with some rainbows!
Rainbows occur through a combination of light refraction in water droplets, reflection, and dispersion of light. It's most common after rain.
For a long time, the pink triangle was the primary symbol for the LGBTQ+ community, but of course people wanted to move away from a symbol associated with Nazis. Activists chose the rainbow for a variety of reasons: associations with hippies, "Over the Rainbow" by Judy Garland, "She's a Rainbow" by the Rolling Stones, and others - plus the way that it could easily be varied for specific people and groups. It was adapted in the 1980s.
A major bonus is of course, that they're just beautiful to look at! It's hard to be sad if you see a beautiful rainbow in the sky!
